Teens die from ‘chroming’ as viral TikTok trend encourages sniffing chemicals
A few years ago, choking yourself until passing out became a notorious TikTok trend. In and around 2022, the “blackout challenge” took the lives of many teenagers who attempted it.
But trends come and go. Today, the “chroming challenge” is the new viral tendency and has caused the death of teenagers.
Chroming, or inhaling toxic fumes, first made headlines last year when a 13-year-old girl in Australia died from cardiac arrest after inhaling spray deodorant as she was taking part in a “chroming challenge” during a sleepover with friends.
Today, parents have renewed concerns as the infamous trend took the life of an 11-year-old boy last Saturday in the United Kingdom. This incident also happened while the boy was in a sleepover and his family wants TikTok banned, the Daily Mail reported.
The challenge has become popular worldwide. American youths can be seen on TikTok partaking in “chroming challenges.”
What is the chroming trend?
Chroming is a social media challenge in which partakers sniff toxic fumes to get high. Paint thinners, aerosol cans, glue and detergent are some of the things that users sniff for their social media posts.
Those who inhale these toxic chemicals instantly get high for brief moment. Videos of people’s reactions after chroming go viral, garnering millions of views.
Participants are mostly teenagers or in their early 20s.
Needless to say, you can die from sniffing toxic fumes. Death can happen in an instant.
While the online chroming trend is new, the practice of huffing, bagging or sniffing chemicals is not new. A 2017 report estimated that about 684,000 adolescents used toxic inhalants.
Chroming can be done through different methods:
- Sniffing: Inhaling vapors directly from a container, such as a nail polish remover bottle.
- Bagging: Inhaling vapors, like spray deodorant, directly from a plastic or paper bag.
- Huffing: Inhaling a fabric soaked in toxic liquid, like lighter fluid.
What are the risks of chroming?
- Cardiac issues
- Pneumonitis
- Asphyxiation
- Kidney damage
- Increased cancer risk if using a product with benzene
- Fainting
- Burns to the face
- Death
What is whiptok or whippit?
Search for deadly viral trends are blocked on TikTok.
Ever since news of people dying came out, TikTok has been banning clips and blocking search results for hashtags related to chroming and other deadly trends, such as the “blackout challenge.”
Whiptok or whippit are other terms for chroming used by TikTok users. Content creators use these terms either casually or to circumvent the ban.
