I Took One Look At TikTok’s New ‘Streaks’ Feature And My Screen Time Just Skyrocketed
TikTok has just dropped a new ‘Streaks’ feature to its DMs, and suddenly I’ve been thrown back to high school in 2015.
If you weren’t around for the beginning of Snapchat Streaks in the mid 2010s, they signified another level of connection between you and your pals. Whether you spoke to each other IRL or not, having a streak with someone was sacred.
Forming a streak involved sending Snapchats for a minimum three consecutive days between you and another user.
Maintaining Snapchat streak was a full-time job back in high school, and people would go to extreme measures to keep the streak going.
For example, if you were going overseas, or were going to be out of signal, you could give one of your mates the password to your Snapchat account. That way, they could send a mass ‘Streaks’ picture (like the one above) to your contacts, keeping the streak going for another day. I guess you could call it ‘digital babysitting’.
Now, it appears TikTok has built its new feature on a similar premise. Send videos back and forth for three days straight in the TikTok DMs and you might be surprised to find a fire emoji to indicate a ‘Streak’.
When I first noticed the fire emoji in my DMs, I immediately sounded the alarm to my long-time Snapchat retirees (AKA my friends who are approaching their mid-20s). The news left them less than thrilled.
Personally, this feels like one more way for TikTok to keep my attention and interest on the app. It plays into the friendships that are built on the platform as we send each other relatable, funny, or interesting videos. It feels like a challenge to find more videos to send my mutuals, and so far? It’s working.
The ‘Streaks’ feature hasn’t been introduced to every TikTok account yet, but expect to see it in your DMs soon!
