I Tried The TikTok Viral Coconut Water Iced CoffeeGabby Romero If you’re struggling to stay cool during a summer heat wave, you probably don’t want anything to do with a cup of hot coffee. Whether we want cold brew, iced coffee, or iced espresso drinks, our summer sips are always on ice. There are more exciting ways to get a kick of caffeine than ever. We love adding flavored cold foams and seasonal syrups to our iced coffee, but the most exciting upgrades come down to the mixers. Viral recipes for coffee served with seltzer, tonic water, and even orange juice have inspired us to experiment with our morning brew. But one coffee addition is absolutely perfect for summer: coconut water. Coconut milk is a great non-dairy creamer option, but TikTok users say we shouldn’t sleep on using coconut water either. The beverage has plenty of natural electrolytes and a uniquely sweet flavor, which adds a lot more nuance to coffee than just plain water. I’m admittedly not the biggest fan of coconut water, but I decided to try it in my coffee anyway to see if it’s worth the hype. There are a couple recipes floating around TikTok—like steeping cold brew in a pitcher of coconut water—but I decided to go in the iced Americano direction. I followed the instructions by @lizzie.andrews. All I needed to do was pull a shot of espresso and pour it over a glass of iced coconut water. The process took just a few minutes, and at first glance, my coconut water Americano looked indistinguishable from the regular ones I normally make. The real difference was in the taste. The citrusy, bright flavor of my light roast espresso (from No. Six Depot, BTW) paired perfectly with the delicate sweetness of the coconut water. But the real star was the ingredient’s savory, almost saline flavor. The slight saltiness complemented the espresso while still keeping it refreshing. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but I think I’ll be keeping coconut water on deck to make my coffee for the rest of summer. Would you add coconut water to your coffee?
